The root causes of violence are complex – poverty, lack of economic opportunity, trauma, lack of access to basic needs, and longstanding racial and social inequities. GPRWC partners, such as the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago provide direct intervention and response to our residents, with positive results.
Most notably, we are part of the City of Chicago’s Community Safety Coordination Center (CSCC) program and work closely with the City and coordinators from other neighborhoods to advance safety in Garfield Park. The CSCC facilitates weekly meetings among high-risk intervention teams, including GPRWC’s embedded staff person, to identify what is driving violence in targeted communities, discuss what immediate solutions can be used to reduce and prevent violence, and streamline access to a variety of violence prevention and victim services
